Kindergarten Carnival
Two weeks from now, the kids will have finished their first day of kindergarten....
Via Moreena's musings on the approach of kindergarten at the Wait and the Wonder, I re-discovered Rebecca's amusing contemplation of kindergarten orientation at The Conniption Chronicles. It was a reminder to me that several blog writers I read happen to have children starting kindergarten this fall. So I thought it might be fun to round up some of the recent kindergarten posts I've read, for our mutual comfort and occasional amusement. Consider it a Kindergarten Carnival. Only without the fish pond or the cotton candy.
I meant to track down some of the other links -- for example, Klee doesn't have a kindergartener, but teachers kindergarten -- but I've only got two weeks on my free trial at Ancestry.com and I've lost all sense of proportion. All those second cousins twice removed are just calling out for me to find them....
In other words, I know I'm leaving some of you off this list by accident. Please, please, if you're interested, submit any and all links you have in the comments, and I'll update the carnival accordingly. I'd be especially happy to include the post of a homeschooling parent with a new kindergartener. Thanks!
- Elizabeth at Half-Changed World wonders how much she should prepare her son for the new social rules at kindergarten. She also explains her family's decision to use the public schools, even though the choice brings her some angst.
- Phantom Scribbler reports on her son's kindergarten orientation and on her son's amusing alternatitive to social promotion through the grades
- Leggy has a five-year old son, as well, but he attends a Montessori school and so kindergarten means he will be head of the class
- Scrivener and Lawmom's daughter is also a five-year old staying in a Montessori school for kindergarten. Scrivener has written poetically about how Montessori has shaped his daughter's approach to everything, inclujding reading (don't miss his announcement of her ultimate arrival in reader-land) and hosted a strong discussion about trends in kindergarten methodology, as well.
- Updated New Entry: Corndog's son starts Kindergarten this year, too. Intriguing fact you can learn from growth charts: it sounds like Cinco de Why-O is about the same height as Wilder.
- Updated New Entry: Incarcerated Uterus's daughter C. starts kindergarten and IC wonders why schools would ever start before Labor Day. She claims this an east-coast confusion, but I think it must be a generational thing, because all of the east-coast residents I know are sending their kids back to school in August this year.
I know I'm [still] leaving some of you off. Please drop me a note and I'll update the list.
A kindergarten carnival! I love it!
T-minus two weeks to the Big Day here. Ack!
Couldn't we just send our kids to blog kindergarten? KLee could teach it...

Loving the kindergarten carnival! (From the perspective of a about-to-be-mama-of-first-grader -- and kindergarten turned out to be wonderful, so I hope and predict the same for all of you!)

My son doesn't start til the Monday after Labor Day- when everyone else starts so incredibly early. But I'm glad they aren't messing with my Labor Day- August is prime vacation time.
